Why Scarlet and Violet 151 Might Be My Favourite Set...

151, the original Kanto set. If, like me, you're *cough* old.. you'll remember the nostalgia of opening the original Wizards of the Coast Base Set packs.. This is the modern day equivelant in my opinion. But why?

The nostalgia. SV: 151 has everything and more that you could want, original and cool artworks, great patterened (thanks Scarlet and Violet) reverse holos, and ultimately, once you get past the trainers.. you've got the full arts, illustrator rares, SARs and more..

What are some of the best cards in the set?

Value aside, the artwork on some of these cards is my absolute favourite.

My top card from the 151 set, has to be Blastoise EX 200 - illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita

Blastoise ex - 200 - 151 - PokePals LTD

What's not to love.. Especially from one of the greatest Pokemon TCG Illustrators of all time, Mitsuhiro Arita. I just love the softness and broodiness of this card, and what can I say, I'm a squirtle evolution fan boy.

Mew EX 193

This card, is beautiful, and just subtle. There's no massive over embelishment, it's just Mew, doing Mew things.

This card is just amazing, the subtle blending of the illustration with the background, and the variant gold version is also fantastic.

Mew EX 205 is surprisingly affordable too, with it costing less than £10 - which for a gold card, is an absolute bargain, the art style again lends itself to the artwork, and seeing the texture of the background of the gold card stock vs the pink, is just *chefs kiss*

Erika's Invitation

This artwork, as is always the case with most modern day trainer cards, is just a work of art. Erika standing front and center, the colours, everything is just great. It's subtle, and every time you look at it, there's more to see. Definitely one of my favourite full art trainers in the set.

Zapdos EX 202

As far as I'm concerned.. this artwork, is just the best. Moltres, Articuno and Zapdos all front and center on this beautiful card. Lightning coming off of Zapdos, and the blast of the sun beams coming from behind. The legendary birds just look absolutely incredible, and it is again, just a work of art. 151 was definitely hitting all the feels on the nostalgia train, and whilst Moltres and Articuno didn't get themselves a full art card, Zapdos EX more than makes up for it in my opinion.

Charizard EX 199

What list would be complete, without Charizard. Now, whilst the world goes mad for Charizard, and he is a great dragon, he's not my favourite Pokémon. The artwork is beautiful, just a care free Charizard floating through the sky, just soaring above the mountains, and when you consider that Charmander and Charmeleon (as is often the case in this set) makes up a complete image, again, it's hard not to want it. It's no surprise it's the most expensive card in the set, but that's why Charizard always is at the top of peoples most wanted lists.

What's your favourite card in the Scarlet and Violet 151 set? Do you agree with my choices above? I think in all honesty, there's no bad artwork in this set. From Poliwhirl, to Psyducks dark and broodiness, Tangela's playful swinging motion and Mr. Mime(s) - all the artwork is a winner, and I think it hit me right in the feels. This is my most coveted complete set, and one that even though it's been out for a little while, I am still not bored of seeing the cards. I love pulling them one by one.
